Joke of the Day: The Corporate Manager and the Bag of Potatoes
After suffering a mild heart attack, a high-powered corporate manager was ordered by his doctor to take a complete break from work.
“No emails. No meetings. No conference calls,” the doctor insisted. “Go somewhere quiet and forget about business for a few weeks.”
Reluctantly, the manager booked a stay on a small family farm.
At first, country life felt peaceful. Birds sang every morning, fresh air filled his lungs, and there wasn’t a traffic jam in sight.
By the second day, however, he was climbing the walls.
Accustomed to twelve-hour workdays, nonstop phone calls, and endless meetings, he couldn’t stand having nothing to do.
Finally, he approached the farmer.
“Give me a job,” he said. “Anything.”
The farmer looked him over and pointed toward the barn.
“Fine. Clean it out.”
The manager spent the day shoveling manure, scrubbing floors, and hauling hay.
By evening, the barn looked spotless.
The farmer was impressed.
“I honestly didn’t think you’d finish.”
The manager shrugged.
“After twenty years in corporate management, cleaning up messes is second nature.”
The next morning, the farmer handed him an even tougher assignment.
“I need these chickens prepared for market.”
It was unpleasant work, but by sunset every chicken had been processed.
The farmer stared in disbelief.
“You’ve never done this before.”
“No,” the manager replied with a grin, “but I’ve been making difficult decisions my whole career.”
On the third morning, the farmer smiled.
“This one will be easy.”
He placed a large sack of potatoes on the ground beside two empty crates.
“Put the big potatoes in one box and the small ones in the other.”
“That’s it?” the manager laughed.
“No problem.”
Hours passed.
As the sun began to set, the farmer returned.
The potatoes were still scattered across the ground.
The crates were completely empty.
The manager sat with his head in his hands, looking utterly exhausted.
“What happened?” the farmer asked.
The manager sighed.
“This is impossible.”
The farmer blinked.
“Impossible?”
“Every potato is a different size. Some are obviously large. Some are obviously small. But what about the ones in between?”
The farmer couldn’t stop laughing.
“You handled manure.”
“You processed hundreds of chickens.”
“But a bag of potatoes defeated you?”
The manager nodded.
“You don’t understand. My entire career has been spent sitting in meetings discussing decisions instead of actually making them.”
The farmer laughed even harder.
“I guess that’s the difference between farming and the corporate world.”
The manager smiled.
“You’re right.”
“I’ve spent years making complicated things look important.”
“But today I learned that sometimes you just have to pick a box and move on.”
Moral of the story:
Overthinking simple decisions can be more exhausting than tackling difficult work.
Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is stop analyzing… and just sort the potatoes. 😄
