My Husband Texted Me “I’m Stuck at Work” — But One Minute Later, I Saw Him Kissing Another Woman Across the Restaurant
At exactly 7:14 p.m., my phone buzzed.
“I’m stuck at work. Happy anniversary, babe. I promise I’ll make it up to you this weekend.”
I stared at the message for a second and smiled sadly to myself. It was our second wedding anniversary, and although I was disappointed, I tried to understand. Andrew had always claimed his job was demanding.
What he didn’t know was that I was already standing inside Romano’s Italian Grill downtown, holding the gift I had spent nearly a month searching for — a vintage silver watch he once pointed at in an antique store window.
I wanted to surprise him after work.
Instead, life surprised me.
Across the restaurant, under the soft golden lights, sat my husband… laughing.
Not with coworkers.
Not with clients.
With another woman.
And before my brain could even process what I was seeing, Andrew leaned across the table and kissed her.
My entire body froze.
He was wearing the navy-blue shirt I had ironed for him that morning — the one he said made him feel lucky before “important meetings.”
There was no meeting.
No overtime.
No emergency at the office.
Just my husband enjoying a romantic dinner while texting me lies.
The little anniversary gift bag slipped slightly in my hand as my stomach turned cold.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to walk over there and throw the watch directly into his lap.
I wanted every person in the restaurant to know exactly what kind of man he really was.
But before I could take another step, someone beside me quietly said:
“Don’t do it yet.”
I turned sharply.
A tall man in a dark coat stood beside me. His face looked tense, exhausted… almost familiar in a strange way, like someone carrying the exact same heartbreak.
“Excuse me?” I whispered.
His eyes shifted toward Andrew’s table.
“The woman he’s with,” he said quietly. “She’s my wife.”
For a second, the world tilted.
“What?”
“My name is Daniel Mercer,” he continued. “And trust me… this gets worse.”
Daniel guided me toward the back corner of the restaurant where Andrew couldn’t easily see us. Then he unlocked his phone and showed me something that made my chest tighten even harder.
Photos.
Dozens of them.
Andrew and the woman together outside hotels, restaurants, bars, even walking through the city holding hands like a real couple.
There were screenshots of messages.
Travel receipts.
Dinner reservations.
The affair had been going on for at least six weeks.
Maybe longer.
And judging by how comfortable they looked together, it probably hadn’t started recently.
“I hired someone after I became suspicious,” Daniel admitted. “Tonight I planned to confront them both… until I saw you walk in carrying that gift bag.”
I looked down at the silver tissue paper sticking out of the bag in my hand and suddenly felt foolish.
Not because I loved my husband.
But because I had loved someone who clearly never deserved it.
Before I could even speak again, the restaurant doors opened.
Three people walked inside.
A woman in a sharp charcoal-gray suit led the group. Behind her were two men carrying folders and briefcases.
Daniel noticed them immediately.
“There they are,” he muttered.
“Who are they?” I asked.
“Internal investigators from Andrew’s company.”
I blinked in confusion.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“This affair isn’t the only problem. Your husband has been using company accounts to pay for expensive dinners, hotel rooms, gifts… all of it. They traced the transactions.”
I slowly looked back toward Andrew.
He was still smiling.
Still relaxed.
Still completely unaware that his entire world was about to collapse around him.
And suddenly, something inside me changed.
The sadness disappeared.
The panic disappeared.
Even the anger faded.
All that remained was clarity.
I walked straight toward his table.
Andrew looked up casually at first.
Then his face turned white.
The woman beside him spun around — and the moment she saw Daniel approaching behind me, she stopped breathing for a second.
Without saying a word, I placed the gift bag in front of my husband.
“Our anniversary present,” I said calmly.
His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Then he noticed the investigators walking toward the table.
His confidence vanished instantly.
The lead investigator introduced herself and calmly placed several documents in front of him.
Andrew looked from the papers to me like he expected me to rescue him somehow.
Like I was still the loyal wife waiting patiently at home while he lied to my face.
But I wasn’t that woman anymore.
The truth had shattered her the moment I walked into that restaurant.
I looked directly into his eyes and quietly said:
“Happy anniversary.”
For the first time since I had known him, Andrew had absolutely nothing to say.
