Olive Oil – Health Benefits:
Olive oil – first, you should know that this type of oil is part of the Mediterranean diet and people used it for thousands of years. According to the legend, the olive oil was also used by Hippocrates – the Father of Medicine. The olive oil has many health benefits. It contains high amounts of monosaturated fatty acids, which are extremely important compounds and they provide many health benefits for the human heart and to other parts of the human body if it’s consumed on daily basis.
You’ll be amazed when we tell you that the experts have confirmed that having regular Mediterranean diet plan, rich in olive oil can minimize the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, compared to the other low fat diet plans. We can also say that olive oil is extremely useful for bone health and wellness, as a weight loss aid and improves the brain function. And yes, olive oil also soothes irregular bowel movements and it minimizes the anxiety as well. This super healthy oil is loaded with mono saturated fatty acids, which give less fatty tissue load to the human body.
Olive oil also contains high amounts of phenolic – the acidic compound which provides the acidic and bitter taste to the oil and which is also extremely beneficial for healthy heart. Olive oil doesn’t contain any carbohydrates or protein at all, and it has some small amounts of hydrogenated fat in it. It also contains Vitamin E and Vitamin K, which are also very useful for the skin.
Here’s what you need to know – a recent study, conducted by group of experts at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers and published in Molecular and Cellular Oncology, has found that an ingredient in extra-virgin olive oil kills a variety of human cancer cells without harming healthy ones. Well, the researchers knew that oleocanthal killed some cancer cells, but weren’t really sure how. They thought the compound might be targeting a key protein in cancer cells that triggers a programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, and decided to test their hypothesis.
So, they had to determine if oleocanthal was targeting that protein and causing the cells to die. After applying oleocanthal to the cancer cells, the researchers discovered that the cancer cells were dying very quickly—within 30 minutes to an hour. Programmed cell death takes between 16 and 24 hours, so the scientists realized that something else had to be causing the cancer cells to break down and die. And, they discovered that the cancer cells were being killed by their own enzymes. The oleocanthal was puncturing the vesicles inside the cancer cells that store the cell’s waste—the cell’s “dumpster,” or “recycling center.”
And, the best thing about this compound is that it doesn’t harm healthy cells—it only stops their life cycles temporarily, or put them to sleep. After a day, the healthy cells resumed their cycles. The experts also mentioned that we need to understand why it is that cancerous cells are more sensitive to oleocanthal than non-cancerous cells.
