For four days, an elderly woman returned to the same butcher shop with an unusual request. At first, the owner thought nothing of it. Then he discovered where all that meat was going.
At exactly seven o’clock each morning, the little bell above the butcher shop door rang.
And every morning, the same elderly woman walked inside.
Her name was Lidia. She was quiet, neatly dressed, and never seemed to want anyone’s attention. For years, she had been an ordinary customer, buying just enough meat to prepare a modest meal.
Then, without warning, everything changed.
On Monday, Lidia approached the counter and asked for sixty kilos of beef.
The butcher, Ovidiu, stared at her, wondering whether he had misunderstood.
“Sixty kilos?” he repeated.
“Yes, please,” she answered.
She paid in cash, arranged for the meat to be packed into several heavy bags, and left without offering an explanation.
Ovidiu assumed she might be preparing food for a large gathering. It was unusual, certainly, but people sometimes had reasons for buying more than they normally needed.
The next morning, she returned.
Sixty kilos again.
On Wednesday, the same thing happened.
By Thursday, Ovidiu could no longer ignore the growing unease in his stomach.
Something about the woman’s behavior troubled him almost as much as the enormous orders. She barely spoke. She refused assistance with the bags. And whenever someone entered the shop behind her, she turned sharply toward the door.
It was as though she was afraid someone might recognize her.
“Excuse me,” Ovidiu finally asked. “Are you preparing food for an event?”
Lidia stopped counting her money.
For a moment, she looked directly into his eyes.
“No,” she whispered.
Then she gathered her bags and hurried outside.
That single word left Ovidiu with more questions than answers.
The Road That Led Into the Woods
Curiosity eventually overcame the butcher’s hesitation.
After Lidia left the shop, Ovidiu noticed which direction she was heading. Instead of returning toward the center of town, she took a narrow road that led past the last houses and toward an old warehouse near the forest.
He watched from a distance as she disappeared behind the building.
The warehouse had been deserted for years, at least according to the townspeople. Its windows were dark, its walls weathered, and its entrance hidden from the main road.
Yet Lidia seemed to know exactly where she was going.
The following morning, Ovidiu watched her again.
The same purchase. The same heavy bags. The same lonely road.
And once again, the woman vanished inside the warehouse.
That evening, Ovidiu struggled to put the matter out of his mind.
Why would one elderly woman need 240 kilos of beef in just four days?
Who was receiving it?
And why did she appear so frightened whenever anyone asked questions?
He considered several explanations. Perhaps she was supplying a kitchen. Perhaps someone was paying her to make the deliveries. Perhaps there was a perfectly innocent reason for everything.
But none of those possibilities explained her fear.
By midnight, he had made a decision.
The next morning, if Lidia returned, he would contact the authorities.
The Morning Everything Changed
On the fourth day, Lidia arrived shortly after sunrise.
She looked exhausted. Her hands trembled as she placed the money on the counter, and she kept glancing toward the windows.
Ovidiu prepared the order, but this time he paid attention to every detail.
When Lidia left, he contacted the police and explained what he had witnessed over the previous several days.
Officers arrived at the warehouse later that morning.
From the road, the building looked just as it always had: silent, abandoned, and surrounded by overgrown grass.
But as they approached the entrance, they noticed discarded packaging near the doorway. The heavy metal door was closed, and something about the scene suggested that the building might not be as empty as it appeared.
Lidia stood nearby.
When she realized the officers intended to enter, the color drained from her face.
“Please,” she begged. “You don’t understand.”
One of the officers asked her what was inside.
She lowered her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked toward the warehouse door and whispered, “I was only trying to help.”
The officers exchanged glances.
Help whom?
And what exactly had Lidia been hiding?
Behind the Locked Door
The officers moved toward the entrance while Lidia remained frozen in place.
Ovidiu watched from a distance, his heart pounding. He had expected an explanation, perhaps even an arrest. But he had never imagined that a simple purchase at his shop would lead to this moment.
The door creaked as the officers forced it open.
Inside, the warehouse was dark and cold. Their footsteps echoed across the concrete floor as they moved farther into the building.
Then one of them stopped.
A voice called out from somewhere beyond the doorway.
The other officers rushed forward.
Outside, Lidia covered her face with both hands.
Ovidiu finally understood that the woman had not been making those purchases for herself. Whatever was happening inside the warehouse had been the reason for her strange routine—and for the fear she carried into the butcher shop every morning.
But the truth was not what anyone in town had expected.
And the most important question was no longer why Lidia had bought so much beef. It was why she had been so desperate to keep the people inside that warehouse a secret.
To be continued…
