Dolly Parton Tribute on Jeopardy! Leaves Fans Stunned After Contestants Miss Several Familiar Answers
A special Jeopardy! category dedicated to Dolly Parton was supposed to be a celebration of one of country music’s most recognizable figures.
Instead, the September 30 episode left many viewers at home shouting answers at their screens as the contestants struggled with several questions about Parton’s music, movies, and career.
The category, titled “Remembering Dolly Parton,” featured clues covering everything from Dollywood and Parton’s acting career to some of her most famous songs.
For longtime Dolly fans, however, several of the missed answers were hard to believe.

The Category Started With Dollywood
The first Dolly-related clue asked contestants to identify the Tennessee town where Parton opened Dollywood, partly as a way of celebrating the culture of the region where she grew up.
Justin Robbins quickly came up with the correct response: Pigeon Forge.
That gave viewers an encouraging start.
But the confidence didn’t last long.
The next clue asked about Parton’s 1980 big-screen acting debut and the Broadway musical for which she later wrote songs.
The answer was “9 to 5.”
No contestant managed to answer.
For fans watching at home, that moment immediately became one of the most talked-about parts of the category. “9 to 5” is not only one of Parton’s most recognizable songs, but also the title of the film that marked her major movie debut.
Then Came “Coat of Many Colors”
Things became even more surprising during a Daily Double.
The clue described the patchwork garment Parton’s mother made for her from scraps of fabric and asked contestants to identify the song inspired by that childhood experience.
The correct answer was “Coat of Many Colors.”
Instead, Robbins responded with “Jolene.”
The incorrect answer cost him $3,000.
“Coat of Many Colors” is one of Parton’s most personal songs, drawing directly from her childhood and the homemade coat her mother created for her. It went on to become one of the signature songs of her career.
“Jolene” Came Up Again
Perhaps the most memorable part of the category came when another clue asked about the famous song Parton wrote as she prepared to leave Porter Wagoner and pursue her solo career.
The answer was “I Will Always Love You.”
Kristin Franke initially answered “Jolene.”
Robbins eventually supplied the correct answer.
The moment was especially striking because “I Will Always Love You” is one of Parton’s most famous compositions. She wrote it as a farewell to Wagoner, and the song later became globally famous through Whitney Houston’s recording
One Answer They Did Know
There was at least one major bright spot.
When the category turned to Parton’s philanthropic work, the contestants correctly identified her Imagination Library.
The program, established by Parton in 1995, provides books to young children and has become one of the most significant parts of her charitable legacy.
So while the music and movie clues proved difficult, the contestants did manage to recognize one of Parton’s most important contributions outside of entertainment.
Fans Had Plenty to Say
Once the episode aired, viewers quickly took to social media to react.
Some fans were particularly stunned that nobody knew “9 to 5.” Others couldn’t believe “Coat of Many Colors” had been confused with “Jolene,” while the repeated “Jolene” guesses became a running joke.
One viewer described the round as painful to watch, while another joked that the category looked more like “Forgetting Dolly Parton.” Other viewers pointed out that the contestants were under pressure and cannot realistically be expected to know every fact about every subject that appears on Jeopardy!.
That may be the fairest perspective.
Being a Jeopardy! contestant requires an enormous range of knowledge, and even strong players will inevitably have areas where they struggle.
Still, when the subject is Dolly Parton—and the clues involve “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You”—it was always going to be a difficult round for fans to watch.

A Tribute That Got People Talking
The category was intended to remember and celebrate Parton’s remarkable career.
Instead, it created a completely different kind of memorable television moment.
The reaction also highlights just how deeply Parton’s work has become embedded in American culture. Her legacy stretches well beyond country music, encompassing songwriting, acting, business, philanthropy, and literacy initiatives.
Whether viewers found the category funny, frustrating, or simply surprising, one thing was clear: Dolly Parton still knows how to get people talking.
And judging by the reaction online, plenty of viewers at home were more than ready to grab their buzzers and show the contestants how it was done.
