Butter From Grass-Fed Cows is a Major Source of Heart-Healthy Nutrients
Butterfat or butter is basically milk fat. Butter contains almost 400 different fatty acids and a good amount of fat-soluble vitamins. As we said, butter contains high amounts of fatty acids, which are more than just energy sources – some of these fatty acids have powerful biological activity. Some of the butter’s fatty acids can affect our physiology and biochemistry in some way and they can provide many health benefits.
Butter contains high amounts of the CLA fatty acid – Conjugated Linoleic Acid. CLA is a popular fat loss supplement and a recent study has found that this fatty acid has powerful effects on the human health. But, did you know that the grass-fed butter has 5 times more CLA than butter from grain-fed cows? We can also say that the butter from grass-fed cows contains more Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin K2, compared to butter from grain-fed cows. As you can see, the butter from grass-fed cows is much better and much healthier than the butter from grain-fed cows.
Butter Contains Saturated Fat, But Who Cares?
People think that butter is unhealthy, because it contains high amounts of saturated fat. But, this is actually an un-valid argument against butter, because the saturated fat myth has been “busted” in the last few years. There were 2 major studies on this subject and they both included hundreds of thousands of people. These studies have found that there is no link between saturated fat consumption and heart disease.
Studies Show That People Who Eat Grass-Fed Butter Have a Lower Risk of Heart Disease
Well, you should know that people who eat butter and who live in countries where cows are largely grass-fed, have a drastically reduced risk of heart disease. The link between full-fat dairy consumption and heart disease seems to depend on the country in which the study is performed. A recent study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by the name Conjugated linoleic acid in adipose tissue and risk of myocardial infarction, looked at the levels of CLA in the fat tissue of 1,800 non-fatal heart attack patients and compared them to other 1,800 objects who had not gotten heart attacks.
Well, the levels of CLA are a very reliable marker for the intake of fatty dairy products. This study was done in Costa Rica, where cows are grass-fed. The medical experts split the participants in 5 different groups – from lowest to highest, depending on their CLA levels. The results were amazing. They found that the more full-fat dairy people ate, the lower their risk of heart attack. So, people who ate the most were 49% less likely to experience a heart attack, compare to the participants who ate the least. But, you should also keep in mind that this was a case-control study, a type of observational study and these studies can’t prove causation.
But still, this study shows that people who eat more grass-fed dairy fat have a lower risk of heart disease – but, the bad thing is they can’t prove that fairy fat cause the reduction in heart disease risk. This study is a good reassurance that butter isn’t that bad, like they all think it is.
Many Other Studies Have Shown Similar Results
Well, this is not the only study. Another study, conducted by group of scientists from Australia, has found that people who ate the most full-fat dairy had a 69% lower risk of heart disease than people who ate the least. Other studies from different European countries (where cows are grass-fed) have found that dairy fat is related to reduced heart attacks and strokes.
Grass-Fed Butter is Super Healthy
As you can see, the real grass-fed butter is one of the healthiest fats on the planet. There’s not you should be afraid of, butter is completely safe and super healthy.
